One of their big breakthroughs was the Xperia Z, released in early 2013 — it was one of the first smartphones to come with a water and dust-proof design, which was a pretty big deal at the time. With the Xperia Z, Sony really made a name for itself in the world of flagship phones and showed it could compete with the best.
